Switching software

Otego Family Dental - Tuesday, July 30, 2019

We switched to a new Practice Management System today (Dentrix Ascend - ).

So please bear with us. Our team is working very hard to learn the new system. Of course there are a few glitches too.

It looks like it will slow things down a bit in Otego, but it will greatly improve things in the Oneonta office. We now have digital x-rays there ( )! And soon, we hope, there will be a sign. Just waiting for approval by the city.

Update regarding expansion

Otego Family Dental - Tuesday, September 18, 2018
So, slowly, but surely, we are getting to a formal announcement. Until then, a few facts.
Otego Family Dental is acquiring a practice in Oneonta. Dr. Alexander Knox will be working there full time. The dentist that is selling the practice will be staying on part-time. We hope to close the purchase in a few weeks.
We have been working on this acquisition for more than a year! We want the Oneonta office to be just as welcoming as the Otego office.
You are probably wondering why we would want a second office.
Well, we're crazy!
Yes, it's true. So, there you go.
Seriously, multi-office private practices seem to be the way to go. They have some of the advantages of the corporate practice business model, but retain the advantages of the private practice business model.

Dental Associate

Otego Family Dental - Wednesday, July 18, 2018
I'm going down to Queens tomorrow to pick up our new dental associate!
He will begin seeing patients as soon as he receives his license. Probably before the end of the summer. In the meantime, he will be observing and assisting Dr. Knox (Dr. Kathy) and helping organize a few things.
Feel free to introduce yourself if you see him!
Dr. Alexander J. Knox (Dr. Alex) graduated from the Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine in 2017 and just completed his dental residency at Winthrop Hospital Dental Clinic in Mineola, NY.

Thank you

It’s not just a dental cleaning

Otego Family Dental - Tuesday, December 05, 2017

It’s not just a dental cleaning

You’ve always been told to see your dentist twice a year for a dental hygiene appointment, but are you aware of the importance of that recommendation?

Studies have shown that periodontal disease (gum disease) can contribute to the development of heart disease. How? Bacteria from plaque can lead to blood clots, inflammation and ultimately, heart attacks or strokes.

Periodontal disease can also cause complications with diabetes and has been proven to contribute to low birth weight babies.

It is MUCH more than just a cleaning. Take a look at some of the things we do during your dental hygiene visit:

1.    Review you medical history and modify treatment as needed.

2.    We check and record your blood pressure and pulse.

3.    Recently, we began checking your oxygen level.

4.    Perform an oral cancer screening.

5.    Perform a thorough periodontal screening to evaluate your periodontal health.

6.    Perform radiographic procedures for detecting cavities and evaluating the overall health of your teeth and supporting structures.

7.    Examine existing fillings.

8.    Detect new decay.

9.    Evaluate the need for sealants in children and, when necessary, in adults.

10.  Evaluate your bite and the consequences of missing or crowded teeth.

11.  Recheck the fit of appliances (night guards, dentures, etc.)

12.  Remove hardened deposits (tartar or calculus) and soft, sticky bacterial deposits (plaque) to promote oral health.

13.  Remove surface staining on teeth from coffee, tea, tobacco, etc..

14.  Floss and check the contacts of the teeth.

15.  Personalize oral hygiene instructions and make recommendations on what tools to use at home to best clean your teeth.

16.  Clean dental appliances.

17.  Provide intra-oral photos of problem areas so you can see what we see.

18.  Application of fluoride to aid in the prevention of decay.

19.  Treatment plan of your present and future dental needs.

20.  Evaluate your total dental needs and refer you as needed to specialists.

21.  Inform you of the latest dental treatments and technology available in our office.

22.  Evaluate cosmetic needs to give you a more beautiful smile.

As you can see, your hygiene appointment does much more than simply clean your teeth!

There have been cases when we have referred our patients to their medical doctor for follow-up. You see your dentist more than your medical doctor and we can be your first alert to a potential problem. It’s vital that you visit your dentist twice a year for dental hygiene, and now you know why!

Call us today to schedule your next dental hygiene appointment.
